Rack-Straps FAQ: Ladder Rack Tie-Down Systems — Contractor Buyer’s Guide

Everything contractors, fleet managers, and owner-operators need to know about Rack-Strap® products — from bracket sizing to DOT rules to fleet pricing. Can’t find your answer? Call us at 800-886-4926 or email our team.

Product Fitment & Sizing

Which Rack-Straps mounting bracket fits my ladder rack pipe?

Rack-Straps mounting brackets are sized by the outside diameter (OD) of your ladder rack’s round pipe crossbar. Measure the OD of your rack’s crossbar with calipers or a tape measure:

  • 1.25″ OD (1-1/4″ nominal pipe) → Select brackets labeled for 1-1/4″ OD
  • 1.50″ OD (1-1/2″ nominal pipe) → Select brackets labeled for 1-1/2″ OD
  • 1.75″ OD → Verify with our team at 800-886-4926 before ordering
  • 2.00″ OD (2″ nominal pipe) → Select brackets labeled for 2″ OD

Brackets are not compatible with square-tube, oval-tube, or flat-bar rack crossbars. If your rack uses non-round crossbars, contact us for alternative mounting solutions. Browse all bracket options in our product catalog.

Are Rack-Straps compatible with all contractor truck ladder racks?

Our brackets fit round-pipe racks in the 1.25″–2.00″ OD range, which covers the vast majority of aftermarket and OEM ladder racks used on:

  • Ford F-150, F-250, F-350 (full-size pickup)
  • Chevy Silverado 1500/2500, Colorado
  • RAM 1500, 2500, 3500
  • Ford Transit, Ford Econoline (E-Series)
  • Mercedes Sprinter, Ram ProMaster
  • Toyota Tacoma, Tundra

Check your specific rack manufacturer’s crossbar OD spec before ordering to confirm fitment.

What is the Working Load Limit (WLL) of Rack-Straps products?

WLL varies by model:

  • Rack-Strap® cinch strap assembly: 333 lbs WLL
  • 1″ ratchet strap version: 500 lbs WLL
  • 2″ ratchet strap version: 833 lbs WLL

WLL is the rated safe working load — not break strength. Never exceed the WLL printed on the product label. When securing multiple ladders, use multiple tie-downs to achieve the required aggregate WLL for your load weight.

DOT Cargo Securement Rules

Do Rack-Straps meet DOT cargo securement requirements?

Rack-Strap® products are manufactured to WLL standards applicable under 49 CFR Part 393 (FMCSA cargo securement rules). Whether your specific truck and load must comply with federal DOT rules depends on several factors:

  • Vehicles under 10,001 lbs GVWR used as private carriers (contractor’s own tools/materials) are generally not subject to 49 CFR Part 393, but many states have equivalent state-level rules
  • CMVs over 10,001 lbs GVWR are subject to full FMCSA cargo securement requirements, requiring tie-downs with aggregate WLL ≥ 50% of cargo weight and regular pre-trip inspection
  • Ladder-specific guidance: Under 49 CFR 393.116, articles of cargo that are long, flexible, and not palletized (like ladders) require front, rear, and intermediate tie-downs depending on length

Always verify compliance requirements with your fleet safety officer or a transportation compliance professional for your vehicle class and operating context.

Installation

How do I install Rack-Straps mounting brackets?

Installation takes approximately 10–15 minutes per bracket with basic hand tools (ratchet wrench, 9/16″ socket):

  1. Slide the bracket clamp around your rack’s round pipe crossbar at the desired position
  2. Position the bracket over or just inboard of a rack upright for maximum structural support — never on an unsupported center span
  3. Thread and hand-tighten the clamp bolt; then torque to 15–20 ft-lbs (per product spec sheet)
  4. Route the Rack-Strap® cinch or ratchet strap through the bracket’s strap guide
  5. Lay straps over cargo (ladder rungs or top rail) and cinch to secure
  6. After first use, re-check clamp bolt torque after the first trip — hardware may settle slightly

Full installation instructions with torque specs and strap routing diagrams are included with every order.
